The History of Nusa Penida

An Island Shaped by Gods, Kings, and the Sea

Nusa Penida is more than just an island of breathtaking landscapes—it is a land with deep spiritual roots, ancient myths, and a unique culture that has shaped its people for generations. From its sacred temples and legendary rulers to its historical exile stories, Nusa Penida holds an identity unlike anywhere else in Bali.

This is the story of how Nusa Penida became the island we know today.

The Birth of Nusa Penida – A Land of Divine Origins

📍 Mount Mundhi – The Sacred Beginning

It is believed that in the year Saka 50 (around 129 AD), the god Shiva (Ida Bhatara Siwa) and his wife Goddess Uma descended to Earth with their celestial followers. They landed on Mount Mundhi, a sacred mountain that later became the spiritual heart of the island.

To live among humans, Shiva and Uma transformed into a priest and priestess, taking the names Dukuh Jumpungan and Ni Puri. This divine transformation marked the beginning of human civilization in Nusa Penida.

🔹 Legendary Sites:

  • Puncak Mundhi Temple – Built to honor the divine transformation.

  • Pura Batu Melawang – The place where Ni Puri meditated and attained moksha (spiritual liberation).

The Island of Exiles & Sacred Boats

Dukuh Jumpungan loved the ocean, so he built a magical boat using his spiritual powers. In Saka 60, this boat was so powerful that anything it touched would disappear. This boat later became a symbol of strength and transformation in Nusa Penida’s history.

The Division of the Nusa Islands

Generations later, a powerful descendant named I Renggan wanted to prove his strength. He took his grandfather’s sacred boat and rammed it into the island, splitting it into separate parts. This event created:

  • Nusa Gede (Now Nusa Penida)

  • Nusa Cenik (Later split into Nusa Ceningan & Nusa Lembongan)

Today, the Loloan Penida strait remains as proof of this legendary event.

The Legend of I Gede Mecaling – The Guardian of Nusa Penida

The Legend of I Gede Mecaling – The Guardian of Nusa Penida One of the most feared and respected figures in Nusa Penida’s history is I Gede Mecaling. Born in Saka 180, he was granted divine powers by the gods, making him unstoppable in battle.

However, his immense power caused chaos in the universe, and the gods, led by Ida Bhatara Indra, decided to stop him. A legendary battle took place, and I Gede Mecaling’s fangs were cut off, restoring balance to the world.

Even today, the Balinese people visit Pura Dalem Ped to seek protection before sailing across the ocean, believing that I Gede Mecaling’s spirit still watches over the waters.

The Disappearance of Traditional Houses

In the past, Nusa Penida’s villages were filled with beautiful limestone houses with thatched roofs, uniquely designed for island life. These homes, made from local materials, were an essential part of Nusa Penida’s identity.

However, as modernization and tourism spread, traditional houses started disappearing, replaced by modern buildings. Today, Umah Ilu is one of the few places that still preserves and celebrates these historic homes, keeping their legacy alive.
